Its slender and strong and it's going to hold up!!
Are you in a jungle??.
No, believe it or not I am in LA at that time. Just north of the city. Lots of birds discussing bird things.
What is the base, legs used?
Don't feed wild animals
WOW! that is beautiful.. I am about to start a porch swing myself and everyone says quarter sawn white oak but after watching this it will be rift sawn for sure. hopefully I can get my hands on some figured timber. Such a beautiful piece.
Nice work。 Like the thought process and execution。 Always enjoy watching your videos。Thanks
nice build
Thank you.
I remember the drafting tables at my high school had this thin, firm rubber coating on the top surface. It had just enough give that the pencil flet really nice when drawing lines on paper. I wonder if this is possible to put on a table today? Very nice build.
😍 This will be one of my next projects... 👍🏼🙏
This is a beautiful design, and the construction is amazing. Roughly speaking, how many hours did it take to make this beautiful drafting table. I’m an advanced entry-level woodworker since retirement. I have two grandchildren, 10 y/o and 6 y/o respectively. I would like to make a table for each but with some combination of cherry, walnut, and maple in the table and let them choose the pattern. They both love to draw and paint, far beyond my ability. Thank you.
I like carving Black Walnut and have made various things. I also coat them with Beeswax and they look great.
Thank you for this video. I really enjoyed how you broke everything down so well. Very discripted.
Me pueden dar los planos y dimensiones
Thanks for the festool commercial.
How do you get a perfect template? I haven't got any pre made
Very nice.
Nice work! What dimensions did you give the table, height and more? I like the size it has and I want to send a similar one to be made.
Good job , well done, I think you have some volume issues
Would it be possible for you to make available plans for the build?
Great job sir! Love the design and will try to duplicate another one for my garage shop.

This is absolutely beautiful
Pretty cool. With more space and not having to keep everything inside the bus as you build, you might be my record of 9 months of work on building a skoolie. Don't be shy about updates! The more regularly you post new videos, the faster your channel will grow. Have fun!
Thank you for your comment and interest. I’m actually already passed nine months! It took me six months just to find a supplier that would sell me the correct steel sheet. I wanted ‘Galvannealed’ steel. I got out here in October 1922 and really didn’t get moving on the bus to about June 2023. I haven’t posted anything here on RUclips because I’m living in the wilderness off grid and really don’t have enough signal to upload very well. If you’re on Instagram, you can see a lot of the progress there. @RitualWoodcraft I’m working by myself out of pretty slow pace and getting things done as I can afford the supplies and as the weather cooperates. But I’m having a blast!
What percentage of mix was your first application???…You did an excellent job on the miters!!!…Beautiful work…
At this point, I can’t remember precisely what that original mix was and the proportions aren’t that critical. If I was doing it now, I would make a mix 1/3 oil and 2/3 mineral spirits. So that’s probably what I did then. Thank you for your interest and keep on creating.
@@wildbuslife I am assuming that you mean “Tung Oil”,,,right???
No, I meant oil based poly, thinned with the mineral oil. Thank you.
Oh that is BEAUTIFUL!
Excellent
Tom, may I ask a question? I have a beautiful vintage Ochenskopf cleaver (600gms). Can I use it for axing out a blank in place of an axe?
Certainly. If it’s good steel, and it will hold an edge against wood, I don’t see why you couldn’t. Especially if it’s a tool you are familiar with. Choke up on it, maybe even hold it with your thumb over the broadside of the metal so that you have full control and experiment. That’s the fun and the wonderful quality of working with your hands, do it feels good to you.
@@wildbuslife Oh THANK-YOU Tom! I've asked on several videos but so far you are the only one to have responded. It's like this; in the little town where I live there is a MAGICAL second-hand/junk/thrift/vintage shop. It's like The Room Of Requirements in the Harry Potter books. Anyway, just yesterday I asked Bill if he had any axes. He said no, but he'd keep an eye out. Then he said 'Just a moment,' turned to a shelf behind the counter and handed me a cleaver. And my first inclination was to whine that I didn't WANT a cleaver I wanted a AXE. Until I took it from him and saw the Ochsenkopf logo. He wanted FIFTY RAND for it! To put that into perspective the South African Rand is currently 20 to the US$ and 24 to the €. Right. So I went online to see if I could find a realistic value for this thing. And I found one IDENTICAL to mine but a bit bigger - but not in as good condition. And it was already sold. For FIFTEEN HUNDRED RAND! You need to see this thing Tom - the BALANCE is INDESCRIBABLE. It feels SO RIGHT in my hand! I think it's high carbon steel and I think it was made before Gedore got their claws on the Ochsenkopf Company. The way the logo alone is inscribed on the blade is a work of art. It's also as blunt as a cucumber and I haven't THE FIRST idea how to sharpen it but there's a woodworking firm here that can maybe do it for me and failing that there's a good engineering firm. Thanks again Tom, take care!
Perfect desing...cost aprox??
Thank you for your comment. I was building custom furniture at the time, and I had many scraps of wood from those kind of projects. So this build did not really cost me anything as I used leftover wood, glue, and tools I already had. And since then wood has gone up 300% in cost. I believe this was made out of mahogany. But even now, I can’t imagine this costing more than $10 US. The supplies required are minimal. Your labor is the enjoyable part.
Wonderful video. Great design. One question. At minute 5:10 in the video you are showing the mortise and tenon for the stretcher between the adjustable stiles. I understand the notch in the stretcher that makes space for the rotating table support. But the tenon appears to have a narrow piece right on the end forming a "u" shape on the end of the tenon. Is this narrow piece on the end the only part of the tenon that will fit into the mortise? And why is there glue right above the mortise? Apologies for the cumbersome description. I'm probably missing something obvious. Again, great work!
It has been some years since I’ve built this table, and I do not have a large screen to view the video, only my phone. I believe that ten on was pre-drilled to accept a screw from the other side, to hold it in place while the glue dried. I don’t recall making a U-shaped and can’t think of a reason why I would’ve may be an edge chipped off that tendon before I was finished cutting it?
Thanks so much for the quick response. No worries. I think I understand enough. Love your design choices. Again, great work. Great video!@@wildbuslife

well done thx
I love it. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks great idea
Great and well done brother, well done. How much do I need something like this in my work?

Absolutely gorgeous! I love Redwood. I'm currently building myself a little end table, American shaker style made of Redwood..(Secondary growth).
Awesome thanks
What type/brand of scrapers do you use? Thanks
Are use various brands. The first scrapers were made from a spring steel, handsaw blades to be exact. The important part about a scraper is how it is sharpened. This differs fundamentally from how we sharpen a knife or other slicing or cutting blade. I would look at RUclips videos That teach how to best sharpen a scraper. I’m not certain that I even have this in my catalog of videos. The last time I purchased some, I simply got them from Amazon, four or five for about 20 bucks but we all know how prices have escalated, so I don’t know what they cost now. I have the brand fox, and a couple of others that I don’t even know. I will check the reviews and see if there are complaints about the metal not sharpening properly or not holding an edge. To me this is one of the most important qualities that I look for in a scraper.
Excellent design. I have been reviewing several of such videos to build a folding table. Yours is the best. Would be great if you had plans. I will try to build based on your videos and share my updates with you later.
Is That Black Walnut?
Hi Tom, very nice build of this drafting table? May I know what kind of finish you used on the tabletop? My friend asked me to build her one of these and I'm having a hard time deciding what finish is best. She needs the tabletop resistant to mold or warping, but the wood also needs to be able to absorb a bit water (she is a watercolor artist) from time to time.
Sorry for the intrusion. I also draw and paint, and I have some experience in woodwork, and I love working on it very much. I advise you to try cotton fabric. I fixed it tightly on top of the table without using glue. I only changed the fabric 3 times over 8 years 😅👍🏼
I am building a metal version of this table using square tubing.
